Around the World in Eighty Days

Around the World in Eighty Days is a classic French novel about a man who, as the title suggests, attempts to circumnavigate the world in 80 days.

Written in 1873, the novel has had world wide success, with the story being adaptated into a theatre play, TV series, feature film, animations and numerous exhibitions.

The basic plot involves the main character Phileas Fogg, a wealthy English gentleman who lives unmarried in a nice London home.

Despite his wealth, which is of unknown origin, Phileas lives a modest life with habits carried out with mathematical precision similar to some sort of obsessive compulsive disorder.

After reading about the opening of a new railway section in India, Phileas argues that it is possible to travel around the world in 80 days.

Most of his colleagues laugh at him for the suggestion and bet him 20,000 pounds that he cannot complete the task.

Accompanied by his manservant Passepartout, he leaves London by train at 8.45 P.M. on October 2, 1872, and thus is due back at the Reform Club at the same time 80 days later, on December 21.

Without ruining the ending, the story takes readers on a action filled adventure across all areas of the world and is a great read for any age group, especially children.

As well as teaching kids geographical information about the world, the book also lets their imaginations go wild, entertaining them and encouraging creativity.

Around the World in Eighty Days is a classic child’s books and definitely one for all bookshelves.
